Nathanael Greene was a Major General in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He emerged from the war with a reputation as General George Washington's most talented and reliable officer, while also being known for his role as a successful commander in the Southern Theater of War. Born into a prosperous Quaker family in Warwick, Rhode Island, Greene was active against British colonial tax policies in the early 1770s and helped form the Kentish Guards, a state militia. After the Battles of Lexington and Concord in April 1775, the Rhode Island Legislature formed an army and appointed Greene to command it. Later that year, Greene became a general in the New Continental Army. Greene served under Washington in Operation Boston, Operation New York and New Jersey, and Operation Philadelphia before being appointed Commander in Chief of the Continental Army in 1778 .
