Barney Frank is an American politician who served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts from 1981 to 2013. He was the first openly gay member of Congress and the first to marry someone of the same sex while in office. Born on March 31, 1940, in Bayonne, New Jersey, Barney Frank was the son of a Jewish family. He attended Harvard University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1962 and a law degree in 1977. Frank was first elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1972 and served until 1980. He was then elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1980 and served until 2013. During his time in Congress, Frank was a strong advocate for LGBT rights, financial reform, and economic stimulus. Frank is currently a visiting professor at Harvard University and a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. He is also a contributor to the political commentary show Real Time with Bill Maher.
