McGivern was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and attended the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. He began his career as a stand-up comedian in the late 1970s, and has since appeared in numerous films and television shows. McGivern has been married to his wife, Mary, since 1982.
